One of the essential elements of democracy in any society is freedom of expression. It is a truism also that the right of every citizen to free speech should not be abused. Similarly, the government may place restrictions on such freedom necessary to protect the rights of other citizen, or public confidence in the government and its systems. However, such freedom to express oneself could be abused and creating hatred and division. Economic crisis and a set of complex political dynamics in Nigeria have thrown up challenges to the unity and social cohesion of the country. One of such challenges faced by the country is the issue of hate and dangerous speech. This paper thus reviewed the concept of hate speech, its origin, nature and pattern as well as proffered solutions in the form of communication strategies that can be employed to eliminate or reduce hate speech in the contemporary Nigerian society
