Social exclusion and poverty in rural areas are increasing in many countries. Rural places themselves may be considered as socially excluded. Social exclusion in rural areas has at the same time reflects what is going on in society at large. The marginalization of the rural populace motivates people to move to the city causing urban migration. There is the need for innovative approaches to counteract social exclusion and counter urban migration. It is also obvious that rural areas may flourish and become area of refuge for the poor. This is possible by providing infrastructure like good roads, low-cost housing, more subsistence food production and commercialized agriculture through agricultural mechanization. The use of farm machinery in agricultural production is always associated with the development of the rural regions where agricultural production is mainly concentrated. This paper views agricultural mechanization as the engine of rural development. Application of mechanization to the field of agriculture encourages the improvement of the working environment, improves dignity of the farm worker, and increases agro-business activities, which help to alleviate the problems of unemployment and poverty in the rural areas. The paper highlights the importance of construction of good motorable roads, provision of electricity to of rural regions, computerized systems and robotics. The paper also submits that rural development vis-à-vis a community-based agricultural mechanization is the surest path to a balance economic development, social political stability and sustainable development of the country as well as the Third World.
