National development is the overall development. It has something to do with the collective socio-economic, political as well as religious advancement of a country. Insecurity, on the other hand, connotes uncertainty, danger, want of safety and lack of confidence. It includes a state of doubt, inadequately guarded and protected, instability and others. A high rate of insecurity negatively affects national development and every other sector. In recent times, Nigerians have been saddened with insecurity arising from bandits, unknown gunmen, kidnappers etc. This paper examines how insecurity poses challenges to national development. The paper recommends, among others, that government at all levels should invest more in security and, from time to time, retrain the security personnel, and by so doing, create a conducive environment for national development.
