Given the non-steady electric power supply in many third world countries especially Nigeria, there is the need to seek an alternative form of energy for domestic power supply. Among the numerous options, renewable energy alternative such as solar energy system is the most popular choice. Solar energy power supply has many advantages over the traditional power generating alternatives such as using generating set. It is green, noiseless and ubiquitous. This paper highlights the design and implementation of an island 5.0 KW solar power system. The system is intended to completely replace the pubic power grid in a home with moderate power consumption. An array of monocrystalline PV-panel array produces dc voltage which charges up a battery bank. The solar-based inverter transforms the dc voltage from the battery bank into a pure sine wave for powering ac appliances. The battery bank serves as a reservoir of electric energy and feeds the power inverter which functions to convert it into a pure sine wave sinusoidal signal. Located between the pv-panel array and the battery bank is a solar charge controller that regulates battery charging.
